A Counter Your Staff Can Follow
A normal sale, phone order, or held transaction starts with the customer and item. Staff can see what is owed, which serial is assigned, and whether the transaction is ready for pickup; taking payment and completing a transfer remain distinct steps. The POS and storefront use the same WooCommerce record, while marketplace and bound-book updates run through their integrations.
The terminal keeps practical handoffs visible: assign the station and employee, pause a sale, take another tender, then return to the order with its notes and status. Hardware, payment processing, gift-card, and messaging providers are configured for each shop as applicable.
Common Counter Workflows
- Product search by title, SKU, or UPC with category filtering — find anything in the catalog in a few keystrokes. Stores using MFS product search get the same matching and ranking at the register, with barcode and serial lookups.
- Payment modes: cash, credit/debit card, gift card, offline payment (Zelle, Cash App, or any custom logged tender), and split payments across multiple methods on the same transaction. Other tenders are recorded by method on the order, checks get their own line at drawer close, and optional nickel rounding is available for cash.
- Hold & resume transactions — pause a sale, help another customer, come back to it. Pricing overrides, line discounts by percentage or amount per unit, stacked order discounts, and custom fees all supported.
- Create products on the fly without leaving the terminal — accessories, custom items, services — all become part of the catalog instantly.
- Driver's license scanner — scan the PDF417 barcode on an ID to create a customer record instantly, with name, address, and DOB pre-filled. Speeds up 4473 prep dramatically.
- Multi-station support — group terminals, cash drawers, and receipt printers per register. Multiple POS stations in the same store with isolated drawers and shared inventory.
- User-to-station assignment for multi-register environments — staff log in to a specific station so cash drawer sessions track per employee.
- Thermal receipt printing with connected cash-drawer kick support and customizable receipt layouts.
- Customer search, create, and link directly from checkout — match an existing record by phone/email, or create a new one on the spot.
- Ship any sale — choose Ship this order to enter an address or find an FFL by ZIP code, and offer your shipping fee.
- Who handled the sale — every order shows who sold it, who took the payment and which register rang it up.
- Item notes — notes on a product, like the box or magazines that come with it, pop up when it’s added and stay under the cart line.
- Layaway, consignment, and buyback / trade-in all built into the terminal — no separate workflow apps. A buyback can take in several firearms on one ticket, with help matching the seller to an existing FastBound contact.
- Bound book at the counter — acquire and dispose firearms with serial assignment through FastBound, Orchid or a paper book without leaving the POS view. With FastBound, a serial already sold elsewhere is refused before it can be sold again.
- In-store pricing — separate price fields for walk-in customers vs. online, so MAP rules online don't constrain what you sell at the counter.
- Sell and issue gift cards at the counter — in a mixed cart alongside firearms, ammo, and accessories, with multiple gift cards in a single sale. (Redeeming a gift card as a tender is separate — see Payment modes above.)
- Pending-payment orders with a pay-later link — park a sale and email the customer a secure link to pay, or copy the link to text it, or finish it in store. Uses standard pending order status.
- Mailchimp opt-in at the register — capture marketing consent right at checkout, passed through with the order.
- Per-tender surcharges & fees — attach a fee or surcharge to a specific payment method, applied per tender.
- Store-credit and gift-card payouts on consignment, buyback, and exchange transactions.
- Returns and exchanges linked to the original sale — route returned items by condition and collect or issue the net difference, keeping the customer and transaction history together.
- Pickup assignment and ready notices so staff know who is collecting an order and can use configured email or SMS delivery when a notification provider is enabled.
- Rewards at checkout for points, customer balances, and points-to-gift-card redemption where the rewards configuration is enabled.
Tax Settings Staff Can Apply Consistently
- One-switch tax-holiday mode — flip it on and qualifying cart items ring through non-taxable for a state tax-free weekend, with no hand-editing of individual lines.
- Per-line Tax toggle — switch an individual non-qualifying item back to taxable right on its cart line, so mixed carts stay correct.
- Tax at the ship-to address — a shipped sale or layaway can be taxed at the destination or the receiving FFL’s address.
- Tax-exempt certificates on file with number, jurisdiction and expiry, with an optional rule that requires one.
- Totals stay correct across live preview, checkout, held sales, and pay-later / pending orders — the tax math follows the sale wherever it goes.
One Local Record, Connected Channels
The POS and storefront share WooCommerce records, so a counter sale updates the store's local stock and order view immediately. GunBroker, other marketplaces, and bound-book services connect through their integrations and follow their configured update cadence.
- Tender Collections report now includes tax collected alongside each payment method, for clean end-of-day and end-of-month reconciliation.
- GunBroker auctions — the register refuses a gun that’s live in a GunBroker auction, and a consignment can go to auction from the consignment panel.
- Gun shows — an enrolled show register sells the guns at an in-state gun show, and only those.
Part Of The MFS Exchange Build
The core POS is part of MFS Exchange. Station hardware, payment processing, gift-card services, and communication providers are reviewed and configured for your shop during onboarding, with any provider subscriptions kept with those providers.
